Frequently asked questions

You've got questions. We've got answers.

Q: Do I receive a certificate after completing a course?

A: Yes. Upon completion of each module, you’ll receive a certificate of completion that lists the course title, instructional hours, and completion date - suitable for your personal records or CEU/PDH documentation.

Q: I’m a DIY builder with no formal training in residential framing. Will this course still be suitable for me?

A: Absolutely! The IRC conventional framing provisions are written so that anyone - including homeowners and DIY enthusiasts - can build safe, code-compliant structures without an engineering or architectural background.

However, the technical language of the code can sometimes feel overwhelming if you’re new to construction terminology. That’s why this course was developed - to guide learners step by step toward a clear understanding of the code and how to apply it confidently in real projects.

If you’re just starting out, begin with the Roof Framing class. Take your time with it, stay focused, and follow along. Section 4 covers a practical roof framing design project. Try to replicate the same project on your own. If you encounter difficulties, simply go back and review the relevant sections.

Q: Do these courses teach hands-on framing or structural design?

A: The Residential Wood Framing Design Series teaches the design and detailing of conventional wood framing systems - not physical construction techniques. However, because proper detailing and design are inseparable from how framing is actually built, the courses naturally illustrate what correct, code-compliant framing should look like in practice.

You’ll learn how to interpret and apply the International Residential Code (IRC) to design roof, wall (including braced wall) and floor framing systems that meets the structural code requirements. Each section connects engineering principles with real-world framing details, so you understand the field implications of each connection, member and layout.

Q: Do the courses in the Residential Wood Framing Design Series qualify for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for licensed engineers?

A: Our courses are instructor-developed, technically rigorous, and presented in a structured, on-demand format approved to provide ICC Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Each module is built around the International Residential Code (IRC) and integrates principles of structural engineering design, covering topics such as vertical and lateral load paths, framing systems (roof, wall, and floor), and code-compliant detailing. Each participant receives a certificate of completion stating the module title, instructional hours, and completion date.

While most state engineering boards do not pre-approve specific course providers, they generally accept self-directed study or technical instruction that is directly related to a licensee’s area of professional practice. For that reason, these courses may be considered eligible for Professional Development Hours (PDHs) or CEUs under most state board guidelines.

We recommend that licensees verify with their individual state board whether self-study or on-demand continuing education courses are accepted for credit.
