Welcome to The

The Conventional Framing Academy

We offer in-depth training in wood framing design. Our objective is to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to design the structural elements in wood framed construction.

The Program

The Residential Wood Framing Design Series

"We take a deep dive into the code, unravel its complexities, and emerge with a fully designed two-story home—armed with the knowledge to design structures and build a great reputation."

This program focuses on the structural design of wood framed residential structures. This course is based on the conventional construction provisions in the International Residential Code (2021 IRC). The course is divided into 4 modules that are approved by the ICC to provide continuing education units (CEUs) under the preferred provider program. You can access the course by enrolling in the bundle offer (button below) or enrolling in each module individually.

IMPORTANT: Nearly all states in the United States have statutes permitting everyone to design 1 or 2 family residential building using the conventional construction provisions in the International Residential Code (or the State amended version of the IRC). You are NOT required to be a licensed engineer or licensed architect except under very extreme cases such as regions with ultimate wind speeds over 140 miles per hour.

What Students Are Saying

Reflections from engineers and designers who completed one or more modules

B. England

The class is VERY in depth. If you REALLY want to know what you are doing, don't just watch the videos. DO THE WORK. I rebuilt all the blueprints with construction details, followed load paths and created a chart (from the uplift) on how to do it. I am FAR more knowledgeable than i was before getting into the series.

D. Nicholson

Throughout most of the course there is a careful attention to detail and a logical sequence within the lessons for a thorough design process. I particularly liked the sample plan sheets. Despite a few minor glitches in the video presentation itself (of which I've reported), it is well laid-out, well presented and is very helpful accompanied with the narrations. I will gladly recommend this course to architects, engineers and designers who desire a good start on residential structural design.

D. Riccio

The course was very informative, and it was very helpful that the course references the proper code sections, Charts and Tables and explains why they are using them and how to use them. I also like that you are involved in performing plan reviews using the sections which gives you a hands-on approach. Looking forward to part 2 of Module 4
